Garden planning

Creating a new garden or improving parts of an existing garden is exciting, but can also be a little daunting.

Where do you start?

I have a collaborative approach, by which I try to understand your needs and aspirations, whilst bringing you fresh ideas and taking into account what the site conditions will allow.

It is important to get the design right, and I love working through options to make sure that we find the best solutions for your garden.

The design process can be used to create borders to whole gardens, whether private or public spaces.

Typically, this is what would happen for the creation of a new garden:

An initial meeting with you to discuss your requirements and preferences, and possible budget. This initial meeting is at no cost and with no obligation. Once I have seen the garden and know your requirements, I will send you a client brief and a fee estimate.

Once you give me the go ahead for the planning stage, the next steps are as follows:

  • A survey of the garden: measuring up the space, checking the soil, aspects…etc. For particularly large or complex sites, a chartered surveyor would take on this task.

  • Production of one or more scaled plans and sketches.

  • A meeting with you to review and finalise a plan, for which a trusted landscaper can prepare an estimate for the hard landscaping whilst I will take care of the planting aspects of the work. The plans can also be used to get alternative quotes from various landscapers.

As part of the design process, I can provide advice on the choice of materials or particular design elements (e.g. lighting, water features, possibility to re-use materials…etc).

The design fee depends on the size of the site, its complexities and the client’s brief. As a guide, my design fees tend to range from £500 - £2000 plus.

50% of the design cost is payable prior to the survey stage. The remaining 50% is payable once the final plan has been submitted.

On site consultation is charged on the basis of £40/hour, with a £75 minimum charge.

I mainly work across Greater Manchester and the North West.
